Middle School

Upper School Adolescent Curriculum: Grades 6-8

The Journey School's Upper School curriculum uses Dr. Montessori's project-based approach to cover English and language arts, mathematics, history, science, art, music, physical education, environmental studies, economics, and civics. Our Montessori-trained guides lead multi-age classrooms, fostering critical and analytical thinking.

Humanities: We incorporate history, geography, creative and expository writing, literature, philosophy, and grammar. Students engage with classical and contemporary texts, develop self-expression through various media, and participate in Socratic seminars to enhance critical thinking.

Mathematics: Instruction includes exploring foundational concepts and applying them through local collaborations with mathematicians, engineers, and scientists. Students use math to investigate and create in their environment. Students can progress from pre-algebra all the way to pre-calculus depending on the child.

Science: The Journey School emphasizes hands-on, inquiry-based learning in areas such as ecology, geology, biology, physics, and chemistry. The local environment serves as a natural laboratory for interdisciplinary study.

Fine Arts: Students explore artistic expression through writing, drawing, painting, sculpting, computer programming, and graphics. Local artists and musicians also contribute to the fine arts program.

Micro-Economy: In the "micro-economy" program, students develop and market products or services, illustrating their value to the community. This has included selling eggs from chickens the students tend; honey and honeycomb from beehives the students care for; vegetables grown in our gardens; and soups made in our school kitchen.

Enrichment Experiences: "Goings out" trips such as visits to Colonial Williamsburg, Plymouth Plantation, Smithsonian Museums, New York, Philadelphia, the Grand Canyon, and more, offer hands-on learning experiences that complement classroom instruction.
