Founder/Head of School

The Journey School is a private middle school founded by Christina Thomas. Christina received her BA from St. Mary’s College of Maryland in 1994 and MA in Leadership in Teaching with a Maryland State Teacher Certification in 2004. She left her middle school teaching position in 2014 to pursue her dream of opening her own Montessori school for the intermediate ages of 11 to 14.  Having experienced Montessori as a mother of 2 Montessori educated children and loving the impact of deep, meaningful, developmentally appropriate learning had on them, she wished to see this journey continue into the middle school years. Dr. Montessori’s method rang true for Christina, as an educator, and she desired to see it used for older children who would benefit from the freedom, independence, and responsibility of being engaged in their own learning. Recognizing that most Montessori programs end at the upper elementary level she saw a need for an independent program that focused on the adolescent child and their specific needs and would attract students from different Montessori, public, private schools and Homeschools to create a new dynamic and social group of motivated learners. In the summer of 2014, Christina received her certificate from the AMI Montessori Orientation to Adolescent Studies and returned to Maryland to begin the process of opening The Journey School.
